Getting Started with Train Inventory Manager

2 min read

Train Inventory Manager keeps each Personal or Club collection in a separate inventory context. Sign in, open TIM, and confirm the active inventory name and your role in the header before adding, importing, reporting, or using AI.

Current navigation groups #

  • Overview: Dashboard.
  • Collection: Inventory, Wishlist, Product Catalog, Storage, and My-Trains AI when available.
  • Workbench: Projects, Maintenance Logs, Loans, and Operations.
  • Records: Reports, Import & Export, and References.
  • Support: Overview / How To and Help & Support.
  • Club: Inventory Settings and, for authorized Club managers, Club Administration.
  • Account: Membership or Trial & Membership when the corresponding service is active.

Add the first item #

  1. Search Product Catalog when the manufacturer and product may already be known.
  2. Use My-Trains AI when a useful photo may identify an uncertain product, or choose manual entry.
  3. Choose Inventory for something owned or Wishlist for a planned purchase.
  4. Review the item name, category, manufacturer, model number, railroad, road number, scale, condition, and quantity.
  5. Add private purchase, value, storage, photo, document, DCC, and note details as available.
  6. Save and confirm the finished record. TIM assigns an inventory number after save.

Know the data boundary #

Product Catalog contains reusable product facts and governed source evidence shared sitewide. Inventory and Wishlist contain ownership, personal price, protected photos, storage, and other private details scoped to the selected inventory.

Private by design #

Pending and Suspended accounts see onboarding and cannot open inventories or upload files. Active and Trusted accounts use TIM within their assigned role and inventory permissions. Protected photos and documents are delivered only through authenticated access.

Keep independent backups #

Open Import & Export for CSV, JSON, JMRI, RailModeller Pro, and portable backup data. A portable backup is the complete restoration format; keep a protected copy outside My-Trains.com and away from the physical collection.
